2026 Primary Election Has Ended – Next Step: Canvass the Results

Carefree Unity is posting the election results as a public service. Again, thank you to all the candidates who ran and congratulations to the winners. Note: Sharon P. Smith and Ted Taylor will be running for the third council seat in the November general election.

The Town has received the unofficial final Primary Election results and is waiting for the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors’ official canvass of the July 21, 2026 Primary Election in accordance with Arizona law, which is expected this week. Following the County’s canvass, the Town of Carefree Town Council will conduct its official canvass of the municipal election results as required by law; the date and time will be posted, and it is open to the public.

The Town Attorney has completed a legal review of the unofficial final results, the applicable provisions of A.R.S. § 9-821.01 and the Town of Carefree Town Code governing majority-vote municipal elections. Based upon the unofficial final results received from Maricopa County and the Town Attorney’s legal analysis the Town’s canvass is expected to certify:

  • John Crane as elected Mayor
  • Sheila Amoroso as elected to the Town Council
  • Les Hardie as elected to the Town Council

Because only two candidates received the statutory majority required for election to the three available Town Council seats, one council seat remains to be filled. Consistent with A.R.S. § 9-821.01 and the Town of Carefree Town Code, the remaining seat will be decided at the November General Election between the two eligible candidates receiving the next highest number of votes:

  • Ted Taylor
  • Sharon P. Smith

“This process demonstrates the importance of following Arizona election law and ensuring the Town’s official canvass accurately reflects the certified election results,” said Samantha Gesell, the Interim Town Clerk/ Certified Elections Official.
